The African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Ayedire, Iwo, OlaOluwa Federal Constituency, Hon. Abidemi Gbenga Ogunkanmi, has urged the Federal Government to translate Nigeria’s independence into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.
Ogunkanmi, in his Independence Day message made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, said Nigerians deserved good governance, economic stability and policies that would ease the burden of rising living costs confronting families across the country.
He said the 66th Independence anniversary should go beyond speeches and celebrations, urging political leaders to confront the economic difficulties facing Nigerians and take concrete steps to restore confidence in the nation’s future.
He questioned whether Nigeria’s independence could be fully celebrated when many citizens are still struggling to afford basic necessities, secure decent jobs and access quality healthcare and education.
According to him, "the anniversary should not be limited to ceremonial celebrations and political speeches but should provide an opportunity for leaders to answer critical questions about the country’s direction.
"What does independence mean to a Nigerian who cannot comfortably feed his family? What does freedom mean to a young graduate without employment opportunities? And what future awaits the next generation if economic hardship continues to deepen?" he stated.
Ogunkanmi, who served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly during the 7th Assembly, called on the Federal Government to prioritise policies that would strengthen the economy, support local businesses, create jobs and reduce the financial pressure on households.
He also urged the government to invest more aggressively in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and youth empowerment, arguing that Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources could be better harnessed for national development.
The ADC Rep candidate further called for greater accountability and responsiveness in governance, saying elected leaders must remain conscious of the fact that political power is entrusted to them by the people.
He said Nigerians should not lose hope in the country, stressing that building a prosperous nation requires responsible leadership, active citizenship and a collective commitment to national development.
He congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence anniversary and prayed for peace, unity, prosperity and a better future for the country.
